Exhibition booth ideas: 10 creative concepts
We spend a lot of time at exhibitions (well, that’s hardly surprising considering what we do!) so, we can tell you that 90% of exhibition booths look pretty much the same. They do the job – nice graphics, product placement, takeaway gift and a friendly team but, and this is a big but, how are you going to stand out from the crowd and entice people in if you blend into the other booths in an exhibition space?
We’ve never been ones for fading into the background and relish a design challenge, so here’s some ideas to whet your appetite and give you some inspiration.
You’ll find out more about:
- Do the unexpected
- Don’t be afraid of minimalism
- Build it once, use it often
- Play with textures
- Let your products be the display
- Put the process on show
- Turn your stand into a studio
- Put visitors in control
- Play with colour
- Use lighting creatively
1. Do the unexpected
It can be extremely effective to surprise your prospective audience with something unexpected.
“A game, a mascot walking the halls for an Insta opportunity, a cool giveaway, a podcast studio. Breaking away from the norm can set you apart from the competition. Making sure you and your brand are memorable and stand out,” says Edward Marshall, Creative Director.
For beer brewing company Budvar, exhibiting at the London Craft Beer Festival, Tobacco Dock, was all about creating an immersive booth experience. The vaulted exhibition booth area was transformed into a quirky interactive experience. Central to this immersive experience was ‘Czech Your Pour’. A wall mirroring the brewery, a 3D tank complete with a beer tap, gave the appearance that visitors were pouring straight from the brewery tanks.
“Nothing brings out the competitive streak more than a beer-pouring competition. A steady stream of groups entered, ready for judging by the Budvar brand ambassador,” added Edward.
Whilst friends battled it out, visitors were welcome to watch from the bar areas on custom seating.
At BIBA Conference, Renovation Underwriting went the opposite way to the corporate stands around them. We built a cosy, high-end cocktail bar feel on a modular stand, with mid-tone wood, copper lettering and downlighting. Their competitors came along to take pictures of it.
2. Don’t be afraid of minimalism
Most people are under the impression that they need to pack as much into their booth as possible: bar area, interactive displays, products, light boxes, exciting features etc. These things can work really well, and there are always situations where a busy, intimate booth can work.
However, by providing an uncluttered, calm space in the midst of a frenetic exhibition environment, you can attract visitors to an area with space to breathe, so that you can engage with them.
“We always say to people you have seconds to make an impression on people passing on busy gangways. They won’t stop and read the details on hundreds of stands to see if it’s for them,” says Edward.
Matching the aesthetic of the show is important, too. If you’re at a medical, dental or pharmaceutical show, clean-looking stands are important. “Think about the colours and finishes you’re using.” Edward.
3. Build it once, use it often
Plan your show calendar before you design your first stand. A stand built to work at more than one show gets you more for every pound you spend, and your brand looks the same wherever you exhibit. Choose a modular framework that can change size, keep the elements that make it yours, and change the graphics for each audience. Deanta’s custom elements went to stands of three different sizes in one year. Reuse furniture, AV and plinths, and put your effort into the one or two features that make this year’s stand feel new.
“Telling us where and when you plan to exhibit gives us the chance to design and reconfigure your stand and assets that can be reused again and again. For extra flexibility, you can hire extra furniture, lighting and counters from us.” Ed Marshall
4. Play with textures
Stands don’t need to be metal, plastic, or foam boarding. If you brave it with something different using textures, recycled and natural materials, you can give your visitors a totally different experience.
You can take textures to the next step with planters with live plants on your stand, or mix different types of flooring to create interest and zones. Says Ed
5. Let your products be the display
If your product is something people can see and touch, build the stand around it. Show a small selection of what you’re known for, properly, rather than the whole range, and show it as it would be used. Alan T. Carr mounted basins and radiators directly on the walls at InstallerSHOW 2026, with a freestanding bath at the front. They filled it with branded giveaways, and 500 branded rubber ducks had gone by mid-afternoon on day one.
6. Put the process on show
If you cook, make, build or print something, let people watch it happen. It stops visitors on a busy gangway and gives your team an easy way into a conversation. The more sides people can watch from, the better. Scrocchiarella’s stand at Lunch! was open on three sides, so visitors could watch the chef making pizzas on Speedibake bases from almost every direction, with muffins and cakes on display alongside. Keep the area around the demo uncluttered, with storage out of sight, and work out the running costs of any cooking equipment early.
7. Turn your stand into a studio
A stand that records something gives you content long after the hall has emptied, and gives visitors a reason to stay. It doesn’t have to be a podcast. Short video interviews or filmed demos work too, and the clips give you a reason to follow up after the show. Invite customers and industry figures to take part, so it isn’t just you talking.
Danfoss built a glazed podcast studio on its stand at InstallerSHOW 2026, with a schedule board and headphone benches so visitors could listen in. Their marketing manager said people were sitting through whole sessions with a drink, which in a hall of 900+ exhibitors is a long time to hold anyone’s attention.
8. Put visitors in control
Technical products are often tricky to show on a stand, so use technology to let visitors see them. Touchscreens, AR, VR or a scannable QR code that opens 3D models all work well on a stand, allowing visitors to spin products around and look at them in detail at their own pace.
9. Play with colour
Most booths will stick with brand colours, which is fine. However, you can use colour cleverly to create a mood/influence your visitors. Red for hunger and creativity, green for the environment or use neutrals for a calming feel etc.
Just using one colour or a combination of complementary colours can really pack a punch, set the mood and really help you to stand out from the crowd.
10. Use lighting creatively
Lighting can be used creatively to highlight your products or features of your booth and create a mood. For inspiration, check out pop-up stores like Tiffany & Co. They never fail to disappoint.
At Motive, we love being creative with lighting. From natural lighting to create cosy spaces to fully lit backwalls. We went one step further for our client, Testo, where we included a thermal imaging camera and heat map demonstration, using lighting in a very different way.
For Cleveland Cable at Data Centre World, LED accents and a curved LED wall meant you could find the stand by its glow from down the gangway.
